Old Tokyo (旧東京, Kyū Tōkyō?) (also known as Tokyo-1) is the fictional counterpart of TokyoWP.
History[]
Tokyo-1 is now a partially submerged ruin seen in the series. It was destroyed on 20 September 2000, seven days after Second Impact, when a nuclear bomb was dropped on it during the wars which broke out as a result of post-Second Impact tension. The destruction of Tokyo-1 resulted in the death of half a million people.
Furthermore, Japan's provisional government gave up on rebuilding Tokyo, which was in ruins. The capital function was transferred to Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, and the New Tokyo-2 city was established.[1]
An official document on the Second Impact is shown in the series for a brief moment. The Japanese Prime Minister also states in The End of Evangelion that he wants Tokyo-3 to be so utterly destroyed and made completely uninhabitable that "no one can touch it for the next 20 years... like old Tokyo."
In the TV series, the Old Tokyo is seen mostly in ruins. The city center is underwater, some of it appears to have been reclaimed as a landfill and used as a test site, precisely the Tokyo Redevelopment Waterfront National Experiment Station 3 (旧東京再開発臨海部国立第3試験場?) is located in the 28th abandoned area in the center of Old Tokyo. This location was used as a testing site and a place to present the Jet Alone for higher officials of the Government in Episode 07.
