History[]
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time[]
After transforming the spine of the AAA Wunder into the Spear of Gaius, Commander Misato Katsuragi drove the ship through the eye of the Evangelion Imaginary, delivering the Spear to Shinji. This process interrupted the Additional Impact triggered by Gendo Ikari, putting Kaworu and then Shinji himself in the process of controlling Human Instrumentality. In his discussion with Rei Ayanami, Shinji declared his intention to choose a world without Evangelions, not by rewinding time or reverting the world, but by rewriting the existing one into one that doesn't have Evangelions. Rei dubbed this process of birth of a new world Neon Genesis.
The act would have involved the piercing of Unit-01 with the Spear of Gaius, apparently resulting in Shinji's sacrifice. However, Yui Ikari stopped the spear before this could happen and ejected her son from the Unit. Unit-01 and Evangelion 13, harboring the souls of Yui and Gendo, pierced themselves with the Spear of Gaius, destroying themselves and all of the Evangelion Units in the Rebuild Continuity. At the same time, the Evangelion Imaginary retracted its wings, and its head exploded in a horde of white Failures of Infinity, which slowly crumbled and transformed back into humans.
