This article is about the organization from the Rebuild of Evangelion film series. For the organization from Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series, see Japanese Strategic Self Defense Force.

The Japanese Strategic Self Defense Force (戦略自衛隊, Senryaku Jieitai?), shortened to JSSDF, is a fictional stand in for the real organization of the Japanese Self-Defense ForceWP or JSDF that appears in the Rebuild of Evangelion Series.

Profile[]

Formed after the events of the Second Impact, The JSSDF are the first line of defense for the country of Japan, more specifically the city of Tokyo-3 and are often seen ineffectively engaging threats using conventional weaponry including tanks, warships, various aircraft, and the deadly N² mine before Evangelion units can be dispatched to properly handle the situation.

The JSSDF works as part of the new United Nations forces and so oftentimes vehicles used by the JSSDF are labelled with UN insignia.

Operational History[]

Fourth Angel[]

JSSDF failing to harm the Fourth Angel

Similarly to Sachiel in Neon Genesis Evangelion, the JSSDF served their role as the first line of defense by launching a failed attack against the Fourth Angel using conventional weaponry including a wide variety of ground and air based vehicles. In a final attempt to stop the Angel, an N² mine was deployed. While at first it appeared to have defeated the Angel, it quickly becomes apparent that their tactics have had almost no effect. With all their weapons proven ineffective, command of the operation was handed to NERV leading to the first launch of Evangelion Unit-01.

Seventh Angel[]

Once again serving as the first line of defense, the JSSDF attempted and failed to destroy the Seventh Angel using conventional weaponry before it could enter Tokyo-3, a large number of JSSDF destroyers and many tank units were utilized, with Naval forces taking the worst hits from the Angel's attacks. While the Angel was eventually stopped, as usual the JSSDF played no role in its defeat while suffering extensive losses.

Ninth Angel[]

A mobile strike force composed of tank units from the 5th Tank company was mobilized, forming several defense lines, all of which failed to hold back the Angel forcing them to withdraw, the last line of defense at Shinji's position briefly engaged the Angel but was also forced to withdraw, leaving Shinji to face the Angel alone.

Tenth Angel[]

A squadron of VTOL Gunships and other tank units were mobilized to attack the Angel alongside NERV defenses but was destroyed by the Angel's cross shaped energy blasts.

Post Near Third Impact[]

While it is unclear what state the JSSDF were in and what their operations looked like after the Near Third Impact leading into the eventual third impact, it is likely they continued to operate in some capacity, though the nature of those operations is entirely speculative as nothing has been confirmed.

Following the near extinction level event that was the Third Impact, the JSSDF ceased to exist.

Equipment Used[]

Vehicles[]

The JSSDF makes use of a multitude of modern ground vehicles, aircraft, and naval vessels from a variety of different nations. The Type-74WP, BM-30 SmerchWP, AMX-10 RCWP, and the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket SystemWP from the Neon Genesis Evangelion and The End of Evangelion appear again in use by the JSSDF. These vehicles appear alongside the Type-90 MBTWP, T-80WP, and Komatsu LAVWP. In Evangelion: 2.0 You can (Not) Advance a large flight of Sukhoi Su-34WP aircraft appear, alongside the U4002-01 Nerv EU Extreme Heavy Lift Cargo Aircraft while transporting Unit-02. The Bell Boeing V-22 OspreyWP appears a few times in Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, and again in 2.0, they also appear in the teaser trailer for Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. In 2.0 a Beriev A-40 AlbatrosWP appears transporting Ryoji Kaji from Bethany Base. In 1.0 a Lun-class ekranoplanWP appears, transporting Misato, Ritsuko, and Maya, a Lockheed P-3 OrionWP appears just before the attack on Sixth Angel. The JSSDF also make large use of YAGR-N101's and AGR-3B's. Various naval vessels are seen in the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, but they remain unidentified. It is difficult to verify if the vehicles/vessels seen were in UN service, NERV service or JSSDF service.

Infantry[]

JSSDF infantry do not appear in the Rebuild of Evangelion film series.
