Profile[]

Built by NERV Second Branch in Massachusetts, USA, Evangelion Unit-03 is one of two Units built with the Second Production Model design. It is the brother Unit of Unit-04 (Unit-03 and Unit-04 were oddly the only Evangelions who were addressed as males during the series). The United States government insisted on having the rights to build Unit-03 and Unit-04.[1]

A few minor changes were made between the first and second Production Models. Unit-03's color was unique, with much darker plates than any other Evangelion. The head was oddly shaped, too, with a rounded top and exaggerated chin. Unit-03 sports a predominately black color scheme with white and red highlights. It has grey eyes, as evidenced by freeze-frame play of its destruction. However, when it first activated, red veins could be seen in the eyes of the Evangelion, showing the infection of the angel.

History[]

Neon Genesis Evangelion[]

The pilot assigned to it was Tōji Suzuhara, but in transit to Japan, it was possessed by the thirteenth Angel, Bardiel, which appeared as a cloud. When NERV activated it, Bardiel took iits control instantly. Despite cuting off his power, the Angel moved it anyway, causing a explosion which destroyed the test site. As Bardiel, despite moving slowly, was able to down Evangelion Unit-02 in seconds and cripple Evangelion Unit-00, making it lose one arm. Later, it briefly battled Unit-01, but as Shinji didn't want to hurt the pilot, the control of Unit-01 was switched from to the Dummy Plug system, designed to simulate Rei Ayanami as the pilot (due to this, Yui's soul inside Unit-01 rejects both Rei and the Dummy plug system for the battle against Zeruel), and Unit-01 easily broke Unit-03's neck. Instantly, Bardiel goes limp, but Unit-01 entered in Berserker mode, riping apart 03's, limb after limb, and even after taking the Entry Plug, it crushed it. However, Toji, the pilot, was severely injured but ultimately survived.

Neon Genesis Evangelion manga[]

The events surrounding Unit-03 are nearly identical in the manga, however after the conclusion of the fight, rather then being severely injured Toji is killed.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Battle Orchestra[]

In the Neon Genesis Evangelion: Battle Orchestra, the Unit-04 is piloted by Tōji Suzuhara. It wields two tonfas as it's armaments. It was originally designed by Hideaki Anno for the Kaiyodo Neon Genesis Evangelion series of action figures.[2].
