Evangelion Unit-01 Type F (エヴァンゲリオン初号機F型, Evangelion Shogōki F-gata^?) is an Evangelion Unit that first appeared in the Neon Genesis Evangelions game. It is the Evangelion Unit-01 using the Type F Equipment. It also later appeared in the opening chapters of the Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA novel.

Profile

The Type F Equipment was equipment developed by Ritsuko Akagi manufactured to solve the lack of mobility and armor strength of the Evangelion units, which had been a problem in the battle against the Angels. Although the weight has increased due to the additional armor, the newly developed A.T. Field propulsion device has both higher maneuverability and defense power than without the equipment.

However, SEELE saw the construction of the Type F, which was too powerful for an experimental machine, as a sign of rebellion at NERV's Japanese headquarters, and requested changes to limit the Evangelion's use of firearms. Therefore, the Type F's hands were changed to a shape that made it incapable of holding large weapons, and it was limited to being equipped only with a Progressive Dagger in the shoulder pylon. However, NERV secretly produced an Type F modification kit that could be used with various large firearms, and it was deployed in disguise as an Evangelion transportation F-Type Equipment during the defense of NERV's Japanese headquarters.

The Type F armor was designed to test A.T. Field generation technology. It was hoped that artificial deflection of A.T. Fields would improve Evangelions' defensive capabilities and using the same concept to acquire the ability to fly, (similar to how Evangelion Mark.04A uses it's A.T. Field to reach space). While this wasn't achieved, the Type F was found to allow Evangelions to make field-assisted jumps to cover a tremendous range. This proved successful, being able to outmaneuver lighter Units even with a massive weight of the armor.

The Type-F has been outfitted with jump jets in its knee shields to improve maneuverability.

During its clash with Evangelion Unit-0.0 Mutant, Shinji created a spherical A.T. Field centered on himself. He expanded the field to several dozen times its original size, swallowing everything around him, including the Unit-0.0. The air inside the field lost pressure, like a piston pulled from a cylinder. Then a flash of bright white as the field expelled thousands of cubic meters of the lake’s water in the shape of a bowl 1,200 meters high. The water was stripped of its heat and instantaneously froze. The ice was strong enough to hold the weight of Mutant without breaking it at first impact, only later crumbling as the Mutant slid downward. The ice bowl absorbed the last of the shock wave’s energy, which otherwise would have slammed into the city and caused damages. The NERV Japan scientists were in awe at the results of the A.T. Field manifestation: The temperature in the center has fallen from 1000º Celsius to -200ºC. They wondered if what happened was Adiabatic cooling^WP, but some said that there are data showing signs of manipulation of the particles’ center of mass. Even the data of the ice was abnormal, being a much stronger ice which wouldn't just simply melt easily. Maya and her team were concerned about what was happening and how regarding Unit-01.

Weapons

Progressive Dagger

Inside the shoulder pylons a Progressive Dagger is stored. Unlike the one used by Unit-01, this Progressive Dagger is longer and the blade is thicker, similar to a mountaineer’s machete.

Impact Bolt

Another standard weapon of the Type F Equipment is that both shoulder pylons are equipped with an electrical antiphase weapon called Impact Bolt, which boasts high destructive power and can be used as a distance weapon. When activated, in front of each shoulder pylon a small black orb floats, a virtual image created by the phase interaction of the A.T. Field and normal space. Due to the surge of electricity—a product of the difference in potential—was real, and several whip-like bolts of lightning can hit the target.

History

Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA

Volume 1

In the Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA, during the Mass Production Evangelions' attack on the NERV Headquarters, Evangelion Unit-01 sortied in battle equipped with the Type F Equipment while Asuka and Evangelion Unit-02 were used for Human Instrumentality. Three years later, Evangelion Unit-01 would launch again due to the unexpected attack of EVA0.0 (Quatre). Unit-01 would be critically damaged by Quatre's cannon. The Evangelion Unit-01 was damaged to the point where Shinji was transformed into LCL and Yui had to pass on the full control over the unit to him, thus making him become one with Unit-01. This lead to the self-regeneration and evolution of the Evangelion. Unit-01 later sortied again to confront the Evangelion Unit-0.0 Mutant. After defeating it, it then went after the Angel Carrier Type-2. As the Angel Carrier escaped using its abilities to phase through matter, Shinji attempted to break the wall with the progressive knife and Impact Bolt. Before it could try again, Unit-0.0 Mutant appeared again and it managed to fire the cannon during the confusion. It fired through Unit-01 Type F’s armor, entered the giant through its side, sliced a notch out of its core and S² Engine, evaporated the entry plug whole, and exited through the back of the neck.

After being shot, the Unit-01 Type F was dragged to NERV Japan's base Cage 2. There the scientist team worked to understand what was happening to Unit-01. The Entry Plug had vanished alongside Shinji. The physical boundaries between the internal components of Unit-01 and its skeletal structure, organs and muscles had blurred, and the components now appeared to be mixing together. To impede additional deterioration, they filled the area with LCL but still couldn't stop Unit-01's liquification. The only exception was the volatile S² Engine, which continued to produce energy without any control. Such was the risk that Hakone was in the process of evacuating civilians and workers with the help of the Japanese government.

CR Evangelion X

It also appears in the pachinko game CR Evangelion X, where Shinji, Asuka and Rei all pilot their Evangelions with the Type F Equipment to fight against the Tenth Angel. Rei uses the Angel's Backbone to destroy most of the A.T. Field used by the Tenth Angel, Asuka uses the blades to destroy more fields, until a single defensive layer remains, but is pushed away by the tendrils. Shinji uses the Impact Bolt to attack the angel, causing a massive explosion, finally defeating it.

In the pachinko game CR Evangelion X PREMIUM MODEL, Mari is seen fighting against the Fourth Angel with her Evangelion Unit-08α, using a pistol to attack, but having the bullets blocked by the A.T. Field. She dodges the attacks, until her left leg is grazed by the beam and the Evangelion is incapacitated, then it takes a direct beam attack on the torso. Shinji then appears with the Unit-01 Type F, wielding the Magorox Exterminate Sword B-Stage. He then uses the sword to cut the beam attack and then swing back downward, destroying the Angel.

CR Evangelion ～Ima, mezame no toki～

In the pachinko game CR Evangelion ～Ima, mezame no toki～, Shinji and Asuka are seen fighting against the Tenth Angel, both of them are using Evangelions with the Type F Equipment. The Tenth Angel uses its A.T. Field and tendrils to attack from a safe distance, Asuka runs toward it, cutting the fields and dodging the attacks. Shinji uses the Impact Bolt to destroy the Angel, finishing the fight.

• It was designed by Ikuto Yamashita for the Neon Genesis Evangelions video game.
