Evangelion Unit-0.0 (零号機試製II式改・領域制圧機「0・0EVA」, Zerogōki Shisei II Shikikai Ryōiki Seiatsuki 「0・0EVA」?) (often simply abbreviated as EVA0.0 or 0.0EVA) is the designation of three Evangelion units introduced in Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA novels. All 3 units are piloted by dormant Rei Ayanami clones, Rei Quatre, Rei Cinq and Rei Six. Later, Evangelion Unit-0.0 Mutant is piloted by Kaji-vessel after Quatre's defection to NERV Japan.

Profile[]

Official name
Evangelion Unit-00 Type II Kai: Area Defensive Unit [0.0EVA]

These units were built from the salvaged parts of the Mass Production Evangelion's External S² Engines and Evangelion Unit-00. Its armor sports the yellow and white color scheme of the non-repaired Unit-00 and is more bulky. It also is equipped with a backpack providing unlimited amount of energy through an S² Engine reused from the remains of the Mass Production Evangelions[1], using the own spine, which would be troublesome later.

This unit is also somewhat unique is that it has been made in three copies, one for each Ayanami clones. The three units are designated as "Evangelion Unit-0.0 [Quatre]" (piloted by Rei Quatre), "Evangelion Unit-0.0 [Cinq]" (piloted by Rei Cinq) and "Evangelion Unit-0.0 [Six]" (piloted by Rei Six).

Features[]

Those three units form the "Sword of Damocles" (ダモクレスの剣, Danokuresu no ken?) network.[2] The Rei clones are usually stored in the Entry Plugs of the units in suspended state and are activated once a danger is confirmed. Each of them covers a part of the Earth, with one of them in Tokyo-3 airspace and the other two in space. This makes them effectively able to strike directly any target on the planet with their high-output laser.

The sensor systems has been enhanced compared to the Stage 1 specifications, and additional waste heat sinks for spacial use have been added.[3]

One major difference to other Evangelions is how the entry plugs are very much different from the ones used by Shinji and Asuka. It had different equipments inside: Multiple information consoles were added, helped by the Reis enhanced ability to process information, they work together with the personnel at NERV Japan HQ. Also due to the nature of the job, the extended time each pilot would reside in orbit, it was equipped with various life support mechanisms for artificial hibernation, so the appearance of the seat is also very different from a regular entry plug.[4]

The External S² Engine were added via a connection in their backs. This allows the Units-0.0 to work without any additional energy supply. NERV Japan had under its control 4 External S² Engines. The connection part of the External S² Engines are the same for Unit-02 and Super Evangelion, so connection is possible. However, the matching for each Unit is too delicate, and it seems almost impossible to reuse them.[5]

The usage of the these External S² Engine comew with various caveats. If the Engine is left unchecked, it may cause problems: if the output is too high, the body of the Mass Production Evangelion will start to regenerate itself while still attached to the Unit-0.0. If the output is too low, the S² Engine may explode via self-destruction.[6]

Facing these challenges NERV Japan, in order to mislead the S² Engine into thinking that it had a complete body already as a Mass Production Evangelion. The outer part of the S² Engine had the sensory organs of the Mass Production Evangelion compressed and arranged into tube protrusions that corresponded to fake limbs. By making these changes , it allowed NERV Japan to have way more leverage into the operational aspects of Units-0.0.[7]

The Unit-0.0s features Stage 2 restraint armor, after it was tested on Evangelion Unit-02 Type II and it showed improvements. The Evangelions arrived to the Tanegashima Space Center for the refitting before returning to orbit.[8]

After the mind contamination of Rei Quatre, her EVA0.0 (Quatre) appeared to have been modified, using now a Q.R. Signum (located in its chest) as energy source, transforming it in the Evangelion Unit-0.0 Mutant.

History[]

Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA[]

Volume 1[]

Built from the remains of the collected mass production Evangelions, three Unit-0.0 were made and placed in Earth's orbit in order to protect the world from future angel attacks. After Rei's ability to connect with the orbiting clones is lost, one of the three units goes rogue and descends to Earth and begins to fight Evangelion Unit-01 Stage 2 Specification. During this conflict the unit would land a nearly fatal blow on unit-01 with its positron rifle before leaving the conflict zone.
