The DSS Choker around Shinji's neck

DSS Choker (DSSチョーカー^?) (Deification Shutdown System Choker) is a collar developed by WILLE. It was placed around the neck of Shinji Ikari after the recovery of Evangelion Unit-01.

After the recovery of Unit-01 by Asuka, and the extraction of Shinji from the Core, the collar was fitted around his neck as a result of his actions, which led to the Near Third Impact. Its primary function is to kill him if he loses control of his emotions again, leading to the awakening of an Eva as it did during his fight with the Tenth Angel.

This necklace is connected by a coded detonator that Captain Katsuragi holds.

Kaworu Nagisa is later able to remove it from Shinji's neck and place it on his own in order to gain Shinji's trust. During the Fourth Impact, the collar activates around Kaworu's neck, generating some sort of floating cubes that converge upon his neck, thus killing him.

Asuka wears one as well, with the intention of killing her if the Ninth Angel were released. Following her releasing the Angel and converting New Unit-02α into a radiant giant state, the choker activated, however, when confronted with her 'original self', Asuka was converted into LCL, sparing her when the choker detonated.

Shinji voluntarily agrees to wear another choker when he asks Misato to allow him to pilot Unit-01 to face an awakened Evangelion 13 within Minus Space. The choker is retained after Shinji wishes for a world without Evangelions, and is removed from an older Shinji by Mari.
