The early chronology (1993-1999) was presented in the Neon Genesis Evangelion Laser Disc/Video Tape Movie Box, released on 23 December 1998.

20 September

GAINAX's internal review proposal (first draft) Android Evangelion (人造人間エヴァンゲリオン^?) is submitted by Hideaki Anno.

22 September

A proposal for consideration is resubmitted as Neon Record Evangelion (新世記エヴァンゲリオン^?).

1994

05 January

The project proposal (second draft) and the plot/synopsis of all 26 episodes have been completed.

04 February

The proposal (second draft) is almost fixed.

March

Ikuto Yamashita's initial design for Evangelion largely determined the current line. Kio Seiji participates in Design Works.

Around April

External proposal is completed.

The first draft of the script for episode 1 has been completed.

Animation production was decided to be Tatsunoko Productions. The TV series staff has been decided.

June

The title was announced on the GAINAX fan club newsletter "G-Press" and the computer communication "GAINAX-NET" as an anime project in progress. "G-Press" also features a Q&A with the chief director Anno.

It has been decided to develop a tie-in with Kadokawa Shoten. It has been decided that it will be serialized in the newly launched manga magazine (Shōnen Ace). Initially, it was scheduled to be serialized from the first issue.

July

The character design preliminary draft is completed.

August

Location scouting in the Hakone area by main staff.

GAINAX moved its office building to its current location in Mitaka, Tokyo. On the same day, a staff training camp for concept design and mechanical design was held at a hotel in Mitaka City.

A color illustration is published in the media materials for "Shōnen Ace" (one of the early mecha image boards). Around this time, the image board was published in black and white on "G-Press". It was the first public exhibition of the mechanical design.

The manga version began serialization in the February issue (first issue 3) of "Monthly Shōnen Ace". Furthermore, until the August 1995 issue, the first few issues of the series did not have Neon Genesis in the title, but instead were just Evangelion. The design of the title logo is also different. From the September 1995 issue, the title was changed to Neon Genesis Evangelion to coincide with the broadcast of the anime.

Anime settei materials are posted on "G-Press". Eight cast members, including Shinji were announced.

25 February

The first report on the decision to make an anime was published in the April issue of "Monthly Shōnen Ace". This is the first article about the anime adaptation in a general magazine. The article also includes image boards, settei materials, and comments from director Anno and Yoshiyuki Sadamoto.

From 03 March to 12 March

The event "10 Days Amusement Park" (10Days アミューズメントパ ーク^?) commemorating the 10th anniversary of "NEWTYPE" (Kadokawa Shoten) was held at the Sony Building in Ginza, Tokyo. An Evangelion panel using the illustration from the April issue cover of "NEWTYPE" was on display. An announcement postcard using the same illustration was also prepared, and was the first announcement to the general public.

10 March

It was the cover and first article in the April issue of "NEWTYPE". This was the first time that it appeared on the cover of an anime magazine and the first time that a full-fledged article was written about it.

The first recording of the TV series soundtrack took place at King Records Studio 1.

Episode 1 dubbing at Tabac. By the way, the initial number of episodes of Evangelion was done in the order of Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 5, Episode 6, Episode 3, and Episode 4 in accordance with the production schedule.

The event "Gaina Festival 95" (ガイナ祭95^?) sponsored by GAINAX was held at the Itako Hotel in Ibaraki Prefecture. At the event, 16mm films of the first and second episodes were screened prior to their TV broadcast. Talks were also held with director Anno and manga artist Yoshitoh Asari.

06 August

"Wonder Festival", a festival for model fans, was held at the Harumi International Trade Fair. At this event, the Evangelion Unit-01 resin model was created for drawing reference was sold by sculptor Haruki Yoshiyama's personal circle, kip. Of course, this was the first garage kit released for Evangelion, but it did not sell well, partly because it was before the anime aired.

The manga Neon Genesis Evangelion volume 1 was released.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Episode:01 “Angel Attack” was aired on TV Tokyo. The first episode depicts at a fast pace the appearance of a mysterious enemy/Angel, the encounter between the main characters Shinji and Misato, the reunion with his father, and the launch of Evangelion Unit-01.

Early October

Animate (MOVIC)'s first Evangelion product released. Poster, underlay, cassette index, settei material collection, 4 types of laminate cards, telephone card, video case. Since then, various products have been released.

11 October

Episode:02, “An Unfamiliar Ceiling” was aired. The first part is divided into two parts, but the tricky structure is that part B depicts the battle that began at the end of the first part as a flashback.

18 October

The Episode:03 "The Phone That Never Rings" airs. The drama depicts Shinji's inability to adjust to life in a new environment and his battle with the fourth Angel, Shamshel. The term The Porcupine's Dilemma, which is related to the theme of the series, also appears in this episode.

22 October

The second recording of the TV series soundtrack took place at King Records Studio 1.

25 October

Episode:04 "Rain, and After Running Away" aired. An episode that focuses on everyday drama and has no mecha action at all. This is also the only episode in Evangelion that director Anno did not modify the script for.

Three TV series theme song CD singles were released simultaneously. Fly Me to the Moon (single), A Cruel Angel's Thesis / FLY ME TO THE MOON (1995 single) and Zankoku na Tenshi no These (Single).

A certain day in October

A UFO catcher stuffed toy is now available as an amusement park prize (Sega Enterprises). Next, a key chain mascot appeared in November, but there were surprisingly few Evangelion amusement items at the time of the main TV broadcast. As the boom heats up after the broadcast ends and the film is released in theaters, a diverse lineup of figures, posters, pub mirrors, etc. is available.

Episode:05 "Rei, Beyond the Heart" aired. An episode that focuses on Rei Ayanami, the pilot of Unit-00.

08 November

Episode:06 "Decisive Battle in Tokyo-3" aired. The climax of the early part of the series, depicting Operation Yashima, in which NERV does its best.

Episode:07 "A Human Work" aired. The communication drama between Shinji and Misato that has been going on since the first episode comes to an end here.

Episode:08 "Asuka's Arrival in Japan" aired. Unit-02 pilot Asuka Langley Soryu makes her first appearance. After this episode, there will be a series of episodes depicting battles with various Angels at the end of each episode. You can also think of the episodes up to Part 1 as Part 2, the Action Arc.

29 November

Episode:09 "Moment and Heart Together" aired. One of the most entertaining episodes in the series. Episodes 8 and 9, for which Shinji Higuchi was in charge of the storyboards, fully demonstrate his positive qualities, and as a result, they leave the impression of extra episodes.

06 December

Episode:10 "Magma Diver" aired. This is a typical plot of a mecha anime, in which foreshadowing is laid out in the first half's depiction of daily life, and during a battle with the enemy, the character succeeds in defeating the enemy due to the foreshadowing in the first half.

13 December

Episode:11 "In the Still Darkness” aired. This is the only episode where Gendo is depicted laughing. Unit-00, which was severely damaged in the sixth episode, reappears after being refurbished.

16 December

First original soundtrack, CD album NEON GENESIS EVANGELION was released. "Zankoku na Tenshi no Tēze (Director's Edit Version)"" is a version in which the chorus is changed and the guitar interlude is revived based on director Anno's concept.

20 December

Episode:12 "The Value of Miracles" aired. A large-scale action story in which Unit-01, Unit-00, and Unit-02 intercept an Angel falling from outside the atmosphere.

NEWTYPE FILM BOOK Neon Genesis Evangelion 1 (Kadokawa Shoten) was released. Rather than the anime comic format where lines are expressed in speech bubbles, this style consists of square photos and captions. It became a popular series, and since then a total of nine books compiling the episodes and three books with the films have been released.

The trailer video Neon Genesis Evangelion Genesis 0:0 IN THE BEGINNING was released prior to the release of the TV series VT & LD. Includes work introductions and staff interviews.

Episode:13 "An Angel's Invasion" aired. This is the episode with the strongest sci-fi flavor, featuring an Angel that resembles a computer virus.

Comic Market^WP 49, the largest doujinshi sale event, was held at the International Trade Center in Harumi, Tokyo. A large number of doujinshi related to Evangelion have appeared.

1996

03 January

Episode:14 "SEELE, the Throne of Souls" aired. Due to programming schedules during New Year's Day, it was aired early in the morning in the Tokyo area. This is a compilation-like episode with new scenes kept to a minimum.

10 January

Episode:15 "Lies and Silence" aired. This episode marks a turning point in the series. From this episode on, the story began to develop in a direction that depicted the drama more deeply and emphasized the theme more strongly. [ Furukawa.

Episode:16 "In sickness unto death, and..." aired. This is the first episode that tackles head-on the theme of the series, "heart".

Episode:18 "The Choice of Life" aired. The second episode of "The Fourth Children Trilogy". The episode depicts the battle between an Evangelion taken over by an Angel and an EVA being controled by a dummy plug.

03 February

VT & LD Neon Genesis Evangelion Genesis 0:1 was released. Contains episodes 1 and 2. LD was released as a limited edition BOX version, but it was sold out on the first day. Also, what is included in this VT & LD series is a version of the TV broadcast version with more detailed drawing and filming corrections. The next preview includes two versions: the originally planned "30 second original version" and the "15 second TV version" that was aired on TV. Takeshi Honda was in charge of the jacket illustrations throughout the series. For the jacket design, extremely thick Mincho was used effectively. The concept and writing for this VT & LD series was done by Yūichirō Oguro^WP, a studio leader who would be involved in many Evangelion-related edits, and the design was by Norihiko Nezu. This design using extremely thick Mincho would later be copied in many media.

07 February

Episode:19 "A Man's Battle" aired. It is the final episode of the "The Fourth Children Trilogy" and can be said to be the climax of Shinji's drama that has been depicted since the first episode.

14 February

Episode:20 "Shape of Heart, Shape of Human" aired. Like Episode 14, it was produced mainly by reusing existing scenes, but in terms of drama, it is not a compilation, but a new story. The last scene became a hot topic among viewers.

16 February

Second original soundtrack, CD album Neon Genesis Evangelion II was released.

CD-ROM Neon Genesis Evangelion Collector's Disc Vol.1 released. The contents include various image data, audio data, icons, applications, etc. It has become a popular series.

Episode:21 "The Birth of NERV" aired. This episode depicts Gendo and his allies past, which had barely been touched on until then. Fans were talking about who shot Kaji at the end, and whether Kaji was dead or alive.

Episode:22 "At Least, Be Human" aired. Towards the end, the drama begins to accelerate. An episode that focuses on Asuka and openly depicts her inner life. Handel's oratorio "Messiah" used in the climax is also impressive.

The first Sega Saturn game software, Neon Genesis Evangelion (Sega Saturn) (Sega Enterprises) was released.

Episode:23 "Tears" aired. The spotlight is on Rei Ayanami, and her inner life, death, and secrets are depicted.

Episode:24 "The Final Messenger" aired. The last Angel, Kaworu Nagisa, appears. This resulted in a rapid increase in the number of female fans.

The first plastic model product "LM (Limited Model) Evangelion Unit-01" (Bandai) was released. At the time, some of the garage kits on sale were expensive and aimed at advanced users, so this product succeeded in attracting a large number of casual users. After that, EVA Units and Angels were made into model kits.

The RPG Neon Genesis Evangelion RPG: Decisive Battle in Tokyo-3 was released.

27 March

Episode:26 "The Beast that Shouted 'I' at the Heart of the World" aired. Episode 25 and the final episode had a unique structure in that most of the story took place in the inner worlds of the characters. In addition, the connection with previous episodes was difficult to understand, and the mysteries in the story were not explained, and fans were divided between pros and cons, sparking various debates, and causing ripples both domestically and internationally. Ironically, it can be said that the Evangelion boom became overheated because of the ending of this TV series.

Director Hideaki Anno appeared on the radio program "Heartful Station" where Megumi Hayashibara, who plays Rei, served as a DJ. He talked about Evangelion, focusing on the ending of the TV series. This is the first time that he has said that he created Evangelion with a live feel. It is also discussed in this program that the VT & LD version would remake Episode:25 and the final episode to create a kind of alternative ending. Director Anno also appeared on "Tokyo Boogie Night" which was broadcast on April 14, 21, and 28, and also features Megumi Hayashibara as DJ.

VT & LD "Neon Genesis Evangelion Genesis 0:3" was released. Contains episodes 5 and 6.

The GAINAX Public Relations Department reworked the episodes 21, 22, 23 and 24 based on the original script, and for the VT & LD version, the episode 19 was re-dubbed, and the and new audio was re-dubbed for later episodes. It was announced that it was a different version with changes in relation to the broadcasted version.

10 April

The 18th Anime Grand Prix^WP was announced in the May issue of "Monthly Animage" (Tokuma Shoten). The TV series Neon Genesis Evangelion won the grand prize in the Title category, Rei Ayanami won in the female character category, and "Zankoku na Tenshi no These" won in the anime song category.

NEWTYPE FILM BOOK Neon Genesis Evangelion 5 (Kadokawa Shoten) was released.

The RPG Neon Genesis Evangelion RPG: The NERV White Paper was released.

In the June issue of Kadokawa Shoten's "Shōnen Ace", it was reported that a theatrical film of Evangelion would be released in the summer of 1997. At this point, the film is being described as a completely new original, separate from the remake of the TV series episodes 25 and 26.

SF Seminar '96 was held at Zendori Kaikan in Suidobashi, Tokyo. One of the programs included a roundtable discussion between director Anno, translator Nozomi Omori, and writer Yūichirō Oguro. This was the first event where director Anno spoke directly to fans about his work after the TV broadcast ended.

"GAINAX Official Evangelion Event Garekigerion" (GAINAX 公認エヴァ ンゲリオンイベント ガレキゲリオン^?) was held at Kaiyodo Hobby Lobby in Shibuya, Tokyo. The contents include display and sale of garage kits from each manufacturer. There was also an exhibition of materials such as cell drawings. In addition to resin cast and soft vinyl kits, later even plastic injection molding kits, which were difficult to achieve cost performance as garage kits, appeared. The huge 185cm Unit-01 was also on display.

Third original soundtrack, CD album Neon Genesis Evangelion III was released. The recorded content mainly consists of BGM by synths, which was used extensively in the second half. The Mitaka City Water Department in Tokyo ran a water conservation campaign in partnership with Evangelion during Water Supply Week. Specifically, posters featuring an illustration of Rei Ayanami in a yukata drawn by animation director Takeshi Honda for this campaign were put up around the city. The idea was to distribute underlays with the same design. Mitaka City was flooded with inquiries from fans seeking posters. It became so hot that it disrupted normal business operations at City Hall. The city also produced posters for the National Pension System using Asuka's original illustrations, as well as underlays for the Parks Bureau using Rei's original illustrations.

05 June

VT & LD "Neon Genesis Evangelion Genesis 0:5" was released. Contains episodes 9 and 10.

16 June

GAINAX new year party. The GAINAX New Year's Party was held at Velfare, a disco in Roppongi, Tokyo, with approximately 700 people including related parties and the media. It was an event unique to GAINAX, where participants were required to wear cosplay. At this time, it was announced that the remake version of Episode 25 and 26 would be released in theaters in the spring of 1997.

1/1 scale Rei Ayanami figure reservation starts (Paper Moon). It is completely made to order and is a limited time item, priced at 280,000 yen. It was the most talked-about product among the many Evangelion-related products that were released, and it was also the forerunner of life-size beautiful girl figures.

A long interview with director Hideaki Anno was published in "Quick Japan" No. 9 (Ota Publishing). An interview was also published in the following 10th issue, and director Anno's photo was featured on the cover of the magazine. Due to their overwhelming volume and in-depth content, these two articles represent a series of related articles. The same interview was published by Ota Publishing in the spring of the following year as Hideaki Anno Schizo Evangelion and Hideaki Anno Parano Evangelion.

An Evangelion event was held at Toshima Public Hall in Tokyo. The event will feature screenings of Episodes 16, 21, and 25, as well as talks with director Anno, Emi Ogata, and Megumi Hayashibara.

Carddas Masters "Neon Genesis Evangelion Volume 1" (Bandai) was released. Consists of illustrations published in various media, screenshots, settei materials, etc. In addition, there were SP cards drawn by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, which fully incorporate the collectibility and premium nature of trading cards. It became a huge hit and triggered the anime trading card boom. Since then, Bandai started making the Evangelion Carddass Masters series, and have also developed variations such as the theatrical editions of Carddass Masters Wide and Carddass for younger children.

A production presentation of the film Neon Genesis Evangelion: DEATH & REBIRTH was held at the Tokyo Kaikan in Tokyo. At this point, there is a compilation version "DEATH" and a final version. It was announced that the two-part series "REBIRTH" would be approximately 60 minutes long each, for a total of just under two hours. The press sheet for "DEATH & REBIRTH" distributed at the presentation was A4 size, 4 pages. Director Anno himself designed the first and last pages.

A special radio program "Radio Evangelion" (ラジオエヴァンゲリオン^?) was broadcast on Nippon Cultural Broadcasting. The two-and-a-half-hour live broadcast was hosted by director Anno, Yuko Miyamura, and Bunka Broadcasting announcer Nobita Hasegawa.

05 November

Gashapon HG series "Neon Genesis Evangelion Part 1" (Bandai) released. Pre-painted mini figure with excellent coloring and pose. In the subsequent series, while keeping the main features, we also developed maniac variations such as Unit-01 (Berserk) and Maya Ibuki. Gashapon also sells collector's swings and 5-inch figures.

11 November

The manga anthology Evangelion 4-Koma Complete Works was released.

23 November

"DEATH & REBIRTH" special viewing ticket with telephone card was on sale. There are two types of telephone cards: Rei and Asuka by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. A total of 40,000 copies, 20,000 copies each, were released at 74 theaters nationwide, and they sold out on the same day.

DEATH & REBIRTH" special news, it would be screened at Shochiku Tokyu and Toei theaters nationwide. The announcement video used footage from the TV series and used "Symphony No. 9". It was Directed by Shinji Higuchi.

Reservations for special viewing tickets with video started. This is the 4th special ticket, following the regular version that comes with a telephone card, and the one that comes with a CD. The system was to obtain a reservation ticket at the theater counter and later obtain a special viewing ticket with a video tape.

VT "Neon Genesis Evangelion Genesis 0:0' The Light From The Darkness" was released It contained an overview of the series's plot, cast interviews, a music video for "Soul's Refrain", and several trailers for the film. The tape came by pre-ordering tickets to DEATH & REBIRTH.

The trailer for "DEATH & REBIRTH" began showing at Shochiku Tokyu and Toei theaters nationwide. The video consists of line drawings, processed footage from the TV series, scenarios, storyboards, and captions such as "Work in progress" and "On hold." It is a film with an overwhelming amount of information and visual sense that is typical of Evangelion. Directed by Shinji Higuchi.

Late-night rebroadcast begins on TV Tokyo. It was aired every Saturday night in a two-hour slot.

TV series selection event begins. Starting from Kurume, Kyushu. In addition, 14 carefully selected episodes from the TV series were screened in Osaka, Oita, Kyoto, Nagoya, Nagasaki, Miyazaki, Sapporo, Shizuoka, Tokyo, Sendai, and Kanazawa.

Emergency press conference held at Toei headquarters conference room in Tokyo. Because the concept for the REBIRTH version had expanded too much, it was not concluded with "DEATH & REBIRTH". It was announced that the complete version of the final chapter would be released in the summer. At this point, the final and complete version was tentatively titled REBIRTH2.

Tamashii no Rufuran/Kokoro yo Genshi ni Modore (single), the single containing the theme song for the film "DEATH & REBIRTH" was released. The 19th "Anime Grand Prix" was announced in the June issue of "Monthly Animage". The grand prize was won by TV series, the TV series. In the episode category, Episode 24 won. Director Anno has been a fan of UCC canned coffee for many years, and a similar can was featured several times in the TV series.
