Aten's Hammer (アテンの鉄槌, Aten no Tettsui?) is an weapon from the Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA novel series.

Profile[]

Aten’s Hammer was the watchdog over the Spear of Longinus. The anti-Angel weapon—essentially a large rock with a rocket strapped to it—had been placed at the L2 Lagrange pointWP on the far side of the moon, where centripetal force and gravity reached an equilibrium. It had nuclear pulse engines, and Aten’s Hammer could build up tremendous kinetic energy.[1]

It was built in order to have a direct response to Angels other than to wait for NERV Japan, being in direct control of the UN.[1]

History[]

Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA[]

Volume 1[]

Makoto Hyuga informs Misato Katsuragi that the United Nations Security Council has authorized the use of Aten’s Hammer, upon the appearance of Armaros who got hold of the Spear of Longinus in the Moon[1]

Whatever the UN’s public justification, the weapon’s true purpose was generally assumed to be preventing NERV from reclaiming the Spear. But events had now directed the weapon against an enemy of both organizations.[1]

Armaros launched the Spear of Longinus into the void. The 6,100-ton rock had been chosen from the Aten asteroid WP group. Tritium-pellet nuclear pulse engines had propelled the asteroid from its station at the L2 Lagrange point 60,000 kilometers beyond the far side of the moon. The rock struck at a speed of over 100 kilometers per second, resulting in a staggering 1.25-gigaton explosion. Even after being hit, Armaros still spoke through Rei Trois, he disappeared not long after the hit. Aoba was told to calculate the location of the Spear and since the impact of the Hammer caused noise, he found out that the Spear would hit Earth and was accelerating in speed towards it.[1]
