The 500 TYPE EVA was a train of the 500 Series Shinkansen^WP high-speed electric multiple unit, put into service between 07 November 2015 to 13 May 2018 on the San'yō Shinkansen^WP Line in Japan by the West Japan Railway Company^WP.

Profile

The 500 TYPE EVA was a 500-V series Shinkansen. It was 204 meters long, weighted 350 tons empty, and could accommodate 557 passengers. It could reach 285 km/h, with a theoretical maximum speed of 305 km/h.

The appearance of the 500 TYPE EVA was designed by Ikuto Yamashita and supervised by Hideaki Anno. The train featured patterns and colors reminiscent of Evangelion Unit-01. The first section They could play video games on a screen located in front. The second car was also decorated using elements from the EVANGELION franchise. The voice announcements have also been customized with the participation of Akira Ishida, and the use of the music "Zankoku na Tenshi no These".

Access to the first car was only possible by booking a special ticket. The same applied to the seats in second car, but its access was still open to the public.

In the first car, there were four attractions: Shinkansen X Evangelion Exhibit Panels, a Photo Spot, a Diorama, and Full-size Cockpit Riding Experience as a replica of the interior of an Entry Plug and offered passengers to sit in a replica of the seats used by EVA pilots.

San'yō Shinkasen Line

The Sanyō Shinkansen Line is a high-speed line on the Shinkansen, Japan's bullet train system, which opened in two phases in 1972 and 1975. It is a passenger line connecting Osaka and Fukuoka, and the second oldest high-speed line in Japan and the world. It is 626.7 km long and is operated by the West Japan Railway Company, serving the entire southern coastline of the island of Honshū, making it a very important railway section for the country. It takes 2 hours and 22 minutes to travel between the two stations for the fastest trains.

Trains on the Sanyō Shinkansen line are divided into five services:

• Nozomi, stops at eleven stations.
• Hikari stops at seventeen stations.
• Mizuho, ​​stops at six stations.
• Sakura, stops at nine stations.
• Kodama, stops at all stations (nineteen in total).

History

Nowadays, three types of trains run on these tracks: the 500 series Shinkansen, the 700 series Shinkansen, and the N700 series Shinkansen. The 500 series Shinkansen is the sixth generation of Shinkansen. It was put into service in March 1997 and consists of 16 power cars, allowing it to reach a speed of 300 km/h (only the N700 series are also capable of this).

With the introduction of the N700 series Shinkansen, the number of 500 series was reduced and modifications were made to several of them. Now there are 16-car 500 series named 500-W, and 8-car 500 series named 500-V now used for the Kodama service.

The 500 TYPE EVA is a commemorative project celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Sanyō Shinkansen line, and the 20th anniversary of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series . It entered service on 07 November 2015. Due to the train's success, the 500 TYPE EVA's service was extended from March 2017 to 13 May 2018. The train was replaced on June 30, 2018 by a new train in the colors of the Hello Kitty^WP franchise.
