Super Robot War Alpha (スーパーロボット大戦α Sūpā Robotto Taisen α?) est un jeu vidéo de la franchise Super Robot Wars sorti sur PlayStation en 2000. Le jeu connaît un portage sur Dreamcast l'année suivante sous le titre Super Robot Wars Alpha for Dreamcast (スーパーロボット大戦α for Dreamcast Sūpā Robotto Taisen α for Dreamcast?).
Vue d'ensemble[]
Super Robot Wars Alpha marque le premier épisode de la série Alpha, succédant à la série DC Wars qui avait débuté la franchise. Ce premier jeu est, dès le début de son développement, imaginé comme le début d'une nouvelle saga qui se poursuit avec les jeux Super Robot Taisen Alpha Gaiden en 2001, 2nd Super Robot Wars Alpha en 2003 et 3rd Super Robot Wars Alpha: To the End of the Galaxy en 2005.
Le jeu est développé par Banpresto, et non par Winkysoft comme c'était le cas jusqu'alors. C'est également le premier jeu où le retrouve Takanobu Terada, le producteur de la série, au scénario. L'objectif de cette nouvelle série est d'attirer un nouveau public en rendant la jouabilité plus accessible. Pour la première fois, les combats sont entièrement animés et la difficulté est réduite comparée au précédents jeux. Malgré des difficultés dans son développement, Super Robot Wars Alpha est le jeu le plus vendu de la franchise avec 700 000 exemplaires vendus sur PlayStation.
La version Dreamcast est le premier jeu de la franchise a proposé des graphismes 3D. Au total, plus de 400 robots ont été modélisés par l'équipe de développement, ce qui demanda un temps de développement long et difficile. Pendant longtemps, la date de sortie est restée un mystère avant d'être annoncé pour le 26 juin 2001. Super Robot Wars Alpha for Dreamcast est repoussé quelques semaines plus tard pour finalement sortie le 30 août 2001. Cette mauvaise expérience de développement vont pousser la série est se concentrer de nouveau sur des graphismes 2D et de délaisser la 3D pendant encore quelque temps.
Super Robot Wars Alpha for Dreamcast possède quelques différences par rapport à la version originale sortie sur PlayStation. Le robot G-Breaker, de la série de jeux Sunrise Eiyuutan de Bandai, est ajouté au casting. Ce qui en fait le premier robot issu d'un autre jeu vidéo à être inclus dans la franchise Super Robot Wars. Le scénario est modifié, de nouvelle facette de l'histoire ont été imaginé, et la difficulté de certain boss a été corrigée. Le jeu inclut également des éléments de gameplay issu du jeu Super Robot Wars 64.
C'est également le premier jeu de la franchise dans lequel apparaît la franchise Macross.
Synopsis[]
En l'an 179 de la nouvelle ère, à la fin de la guerre entre le Gouvernement fédéral de la Terre et le duché de Zeon, un immense objet apparaît soudainement et chute dans le sud de l'océan Pacifique aux larges de l'île d'Atalia. Une enquête est menée autour de cette anomalie nommé ASS-1. Il apparaît qu'il s'agit d'un gigantesque vaisseau extraterrestre et qu'une gigantesque guerre interstellaire est en cours au-delà du système solaire. Pour se prévenir d'une guerre avec une race alien, le Gouvernement fédéral de la Terre forme la Special Space Force SDF et augmente son armement en se servant de la technologie embarqué par l'ASS-1. C'est ainsi qu'est développé le super vaisseau de guerre Excelion.
En l'an 187, de nombreux mouvements anti-fédérations ont vu le jour, causant plusieurs problèmes sur Terre. L'armée extraterrestre des Aerogaters apparaît à ce moment là et menace la planète bleue. Malgré les troubles sur Terre, la SDF et sa flotte parviennent à les arrêter. Cependant, au cours de la bataille, un monstre spatial (STMC) à la force démentielle s'approche du système solaire. Comme seul moyen pour le contrer, la SDF décide de sacrifier l'Excelion près de la treizième planète du système solaire et provoque artificiellement un effondrement gravitationnel détruisant tous les adversaires.

- Le robot Mazinkaiser, dérivé de la franchise Mazinger, a été créé spécialement pour le jeu. Un an après la sortie originale du jeu, un OVA de sept épisodes autour de Mazinkaiser est sorti. Elle est suivie en 2002 de l'OVA Mazinkaiser vs the Great Darkness General.
